Historical Rome Apartment Campo dei Fiori Via dei Cappellari

One Bedroom, One Bath with all the Amenities --  Sleeps up to 5

In the heart of a typical Roman neighborhood, you can enjoy daily Italian life. Stay in the center of historic Rome, near Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori with famous sights just minutes away.

Between Piazza Navona, that retains the oval shape of a Roman racetrack, and Campo dei Fiori, a bustling marketplace, winds Via dei Cappellari. Too narrow for two vehicles to pass, it is lined on both sides with buildings from the 1400 and 1500s.

You are very central, five minutes walk to Piazza Navona, ten to the Pantheon, and twenty to the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. In the other direction, and very close, are the antique shops of Via Giulia and the Tiber river. A twenty minute walk puts you at St Peter's. Cross nearby pedestrian bridge Ponte Sisto and in ten minutes you are in Trastevere.

This part of Rome bustles with commerce, as it has for thousands of years. Vendors and shoppers make their way to and from the famous and largest outdoor market within the city in Campo dei Fiori. Named for the hat makers "cappellari" that once populated the street, it now houses many woodworking shops. Throughout this quarter are woodworkers, craftspeople who are restoring antique furniture, others are making reproductions. Their workshops open right onto the street, as they have since Roman times. Peer into see what they are working on. You will also find antiques for sale, and many trendy boutiques with artful offerings.

Campo dei Fiori is a market by day. In the evening, the restaurants around the perimeter move tables outside and everybody turns out to greet friends and to enjoy watching the parade of people, locals and tourists, too.

Enter the large wooden door of your apartment building with a tiled hallway to the elevator that takes you to the 4th floor. Neighbors take advantage of the light in the stairwell to grow flowers outside their doors.

The foyer of the Campo dei Fiori apartment is large and has a chest and antique mirror. It is nice to have this little bit of extra space to drop your shopping or to leave your coats and bags.

Step in the the comfortable living room with double couches, put up your feet and relax. One sofa converts to a double bed. A television with satellite reception ensures you can catch up on English language news. A large hutch contains tableware and serving dishes.

The living room faces the separate, open-plan, eat-in kitchen. Along one wall is the kitchen equipment: gas stove top, oven, dishwasher, pots and pans. Everything you need to turn fresh ingredients from the open air market in Campo dei Fiori nearby into a lovely meal.

The bedroom is very large full of light from two large windows. It contains a king sized bed which converts to twins. A twin bed fits in comfortably, too, and can serve as a day bed. A large double armoire holds all your clothes.

In the bedroom, a small desk gives you room to study your guidebooks or to hook up your laptop computer to the internet with a fast ADSL line. The apartment has two telephones, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. Why work from home, you can work from Rome!

There are built-in air conditioning units in both the living room and bedroom so you can be comfortable even on the hottest summer days. All utilities except for the cost of the air conditioning air included.

This is a very desirable location in a typical Roman neighborhood. Dining and shopping choices abound.

We have inspected this apartment. Our opinion:

  • The neighborhood is wonderful, great for exploring and taking in typical Italian life.

  • Clean and tidy.

  • The floor is a little springy, nothing to be concerned about.

  • This is an area filled with craft shops, so when walking along in the day time, you may have to dodge people as well as small delivery vans carrying furniture in and out for renovations.

  • The locals travel on foot or motor cycle, so some street noise as they travel to and from work and shopping in the Campo.
